Steven Bernard.png

My name is Steven Bernard and I am the Senior Visual Journalist at the Financial Times, where I have worked for more than 25 years.

My formal training is as a scientific illustrator. What’s that I hear you ask? It involves producing illustrations for medical journals, natural history publications, anything where you are trying to convey information visually where a photograph cannot. Think of diagrams showing the human circulatory system, or showing a procedure to fix a broken bone.

I have always had a love of cartography, from a young age I would spend many hours poring over the pages of my well-thumbed Bartholemew atlas.

Although I was fascinated by maps, it wasn't until I joined the FT that I discovered how powerful they can be as a tool for conveying information.

My goal is always to convey the primary message in the data with a map, but I also feel it is equally important to produce a map that is aesthetically pleasing.

My QGIS tutorial videos were my attempt to give something back to the cartographic community and help young cartographers get to grips with the software.

Outside of mapping I'm a keen photographer, avid Formula One fan and have recently returned to my first love of drawing.

You can find all my recent work on Twitter.
